What is Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)?

Refractive lens exchange (RLE) is an advanced vision correction procedure that can help you achieve clearer, sharper vision and reduce your dependence on glasses or contact lenses. During RLE, your eye surgeon uses precise ultrasound technology to gently remove your eye's natural lens and replace it with a premium intraocular lens (IOL) designed to meet your specific vision needs.

RLE is often recommended as an alternative to LASIK for patients over the age of 40, those with presbyopia, and those with thinner corneas, dry eye, or severe refractive errors.

Benefits of RLE

Refractive lens exchange can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia, depending on the IOL you choose. Many patients enjoy partial or complete freedom from visual aids after RLE, allowing them to experience life with enhanced clarity and convenience.

An additional long-term benefit of RLE is cataract prevention. Since cataracts can only develop on your natural lens, replacing it with an IOL eliminates the possibility of cataract formation in the future, providing lasting peace of mind along with improved vision.

What is the Light Adjustable Lens?

The Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) is the first and only IOL that can be customized after RLE to meet your precise visual needs. Intraocular lenses (IOLs) are artificial lenses that replace the natural lens during RLE and improve your vision.

What sets the LAL apart is that its focusing power can be adjusted after your procedure to achieve eyesight that is truly personalized to you. Through a series of quick, painless UV-light treatments, your eye doctor will change the shape of the lens to meet your desired vision.

You’ll have the opportunity to test-drive your vision between each session until arriving at your final, personalized visual results.

Am I a Good Candidate for RLE?

Before undergoing RLE, you’ll need to attend a consultation with your eye doctor at Clear Vision San Antonio. They will conduct a comprehensive eye exam, review your medical history, and ask questions about your lifestyle and visual goals to determine whether RLE is right for you. Good candidates for RLE are typically:

Ages 40-50 and above
Patients with presbyopia or common refractive errors
Patients who have had a stable prescription for at least one year
Not pregnant or nursing
Free of eye conditions like glaucoma and uveitis
Individuals with extreme refractive errors that may fall outside the treatable range of LASIK
Patients who want to prevent cataracts in the future
Patients who want to enjoy freedom from visual aids

What Our Patients Say

Can’t say enough positive things about my experience with CHES, Dr Sepulveda,
“Dr. Sepulveda and Dr. Lopez have taken excellent care of me through my surgery, and I am really looking forward to the completion of my LAL adjustments and finalization of the procedure. “Incredibly caring and attentive staff at the office and at the surgery center. I was extremely stressed about my surgery and it could not have been a smoother and easier experience. I felt like everyone's concern was for my comfort and well-being. All the doctors, nurses, and office staff need to be recognized as the best team there is. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.”

- Catherine P.

I’ve been in glasses/contacts since the 4th grade, and now at 50 years young, I decided to have RLE. Within hours, I was able to see clearer than I had been able to wearing contacts; there was no eye discomfort or complications. Again, WITHIN HOURS better vision! The level of skill, talent, and precision Dr. Sepulveda encompasses can only be attributed to a gift that he is so gracious enough to share.”
